Zoltán Szilágyi Jew's Harp Maker

The jew's harp was one of the most popular instruments in the last millennium. With the Wednesday evening performances of the Austrian duo Attwenger, we heard the trump strikingly employed in avant-garde pop music. And with an Albrechtsberger concerto, there was even a bit of written-out art music (not to mention Leo Tadagawa's playing of the William Tell Overture on a mail coupon).
The problem with this sort of subject, especially with the question of what may have been played on the earlier harps, is each part is a study in itself and does not therefore lend itself to such overviews. Unless each part rests on a firm foundation and the whole is qualified by the wider background then although the intention is noble the result is a rather bland and sometimes misleading addition to the corpus of such material already available.
This instrument is considered to be one of the oldest musical instruments in the world;1 a musician apparently playing it can be seen in a Chinese drawing from the 4th century BC.2 Despite its common English name, and the sometimes used Jew's trump”, it has no particular connection with Jews or Judaism. This instrument is native to Asia and used in all tribes of Turkic peoples in Asia, among whom it is variously referred to as a temir komuz (literally, iron komuz), agiz komuzu (literally, mouth komuz), gubuz or doromb.
Decent realistic harmonica sounds can be achieved with physical modeling synths as well as sample-based software instruments However, the DM48 cannot replace or convincingly emulate an acoustic harmonica. I play a little on sax and my main instrument is jew's harp. It has lot of medical possibilities.
This shrutibox is ideal for people who look for a small and light instrument, e. g. for travelling. The bellows are relatively small, therefore you need a little practice and constant attention to keep the sound stable and even - especially when several levers are opened. Including a carry bag. Tonal range from c to c'.
For instance, among the Yi-population of South-China we will find a 4-lamella type, idioglot cut out of the brass cartridge-case of a bullet. - A decade ago it was the Norwegian Jew's harp smith Knut Tveit who forged in an excentric way by using the steel of a WW II-bomber, that was crashed on the Norwegian shore.
On the other hand our aim is to advance the use of high grade Jew's Harp on stage. Still, the choice of good quality Jew's Harps in musical instruments stores is scrappy and of fairground or tourist souvenir quality. With our range of Jew's Harps we intend to show the full potential of this tiny instrument.
A Jawsaphone is made by attaching the jaw harp to a trumpet bell. The trumpet amplifies the sound of the harp without the use of electricity, and gives a unique sound to the instrument. The Jawsaphone is played by placing it lightly against the lips. In these experimental instruments, the jews harp can be removed from the bell, and played separately because it is held in place by a small spring.
At Scoil na gCláirseach last month I presented a lecture and a workshop on the medieval Gaelic harp traditions. The lecture outlined my recent work on the setup and tuning of the medieval Gaelic harps, while the workshop later in the week explored the different strands of evidence for medieval Gaelic music.
